Patrick Bamford: That was for Kalvin and his family

Striker on win against the Saints.

Patrick Bamford scored his 13th goal of the season, getting the scoring started in the 3-0 win over Southampton.

The Whites put in an excellent showing throughout, but particularly in the second half when they scored all three goals to secure the points. Leeds United’s top-scorer gave his thoughts after the match.

“We said before we started the warm up that it was more important than anything to win today, no matter how we did it,” Bamford explained.

“To be honest it was quite an even game, I think first half especially.

“They’re the first team I have seen come and press, similarly to the way we did, so it made it difficult and it was then really about who got the first goal.

“Fortunately we got it, then went on to get three points.

A perfectly executed left-footed strike just two minutes after the restart from Bamford put his side ahead, for which the striker was quick to credit his teammate.

He said: “To be honest it was a great ball from Tyler [Roberts], he played a similar one against Wolves which got ruled out.

“It was a great pass and it was just about hitting it hard across the ‘keeper.”

Kalvin Phillips was missing from the squad due to injury, but all the thoughts of everyone at Leeds United remain with the midfielder and his family, after the passing of his Grandma.

Marcelo Bielsa paid tribute straight away after the match, as did Bamford along with the rest of the squad by holding up a shirt, dedicating the win to the family and Granny Val’s memory.

“The squad is very together, I have said it in a lot of interviews before,” Bamford stated.

“We’re a tight-knit bunch of lads and I think that anyone who has watched the documentary on Amazon that Granny Val was a big part of the club.

“Loads of people have grown to love her, without ever really knowing her, it’s a big loss.

“That was for Kalvin and his family.”
