Crystal Palace: Five Memorable Matches

Crystal Palace: Five Memorable Matches

We look back at five previous matches with the Eagles.

Wednesday 10th March, 1965- Crystal Palace 0-3 Leeds United

Under the guidance of Don Revie, Leeds were going for the League and FA Cup double during the 1964/65 season. A trip to Selhurst Park in the quarter final would set up a semi-final with Manchester United, should the Whites progress. Drawing 0-0 at half-time with second division Palace, Leeds turned on the style in the second half. Two goals from Alan Peacock as well as one from Jim Storrie sent Revie’s side through to the next round. From there, they would defeat Manchester United before losing to Liverpool in extra-time of the final.

Saturday 13th April, 1985- Leeds United 4-1 Crystal Palace

The Whites hadn’t given up on their chances of promotion from the Second Division at the back end of the season, whilst Palace had to remain alert down the opposite end of the table. Ian Baird opened the scoring in the 20th minute for Eddie Gray’s side, who would need until the hour-mark in the match to double the lead. Scott Sellars got the goal, reacting quickest in the box to turn home a rebound. John Sheridan made it three-nil in the 83rd minute, but Palace pulled one back through Tony Finnigan just a minute later. Not to be denied the points, Sheridan wrapped up victory with an excellent 25-yard strike to make it four.

Saturday 31st January, 1998- Crystal Palace 0-2 Leeds United

A hard-fought Premier League encounter at Selhurst Park saw the Whites - playing in their half yellow half blue kit - come out on top. It had taken just six minutes to open the scoring for Leeds, as Rod Wallace raced onto a ball in behind the Palace defence to smash low and hard into the back of the net through the legs of the goalkeeper. Only six minutes later, the lead was doubled. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink showed excellent chest control 30-yards from goal, turned, ran forward and unleashed a powerful effort from range into the back of the net. The two early goals were enough for George Graham’s side to take the points home with them.

Tuesday 26th August, 2008- Leeds United 4-0 Crystal Palace

Gary McAllister was the manager of Leeds United when they dumped Neil Warnock’s Crystal Palace out of the League Cup in the second round. The tie was only 11 minutes old when Jonathan Douglas scored from a Jermaine Beckford flick-on. Provider would turn goalscorer on the half-an-hour mark as Beckford doubled the lead by heading home a Neil Kilkenny cross. Next up with a header would be Luciano Becchio, powering a header in at the start of the second half to make it three-nil. There was still time for substitute Enoch Showumni to come off the bench and curl home a fourth, putting the gloss on an excellent performance at Elland Road.

Saturday 24th November, 2012- Leeds United 2-1 Crystal Palace

Palace arrived at Elland Road on a 14 match unbeaten run in the league. Neil Warnock’s Leeds United side were the side looking to end that run, and they did just that. When a cross wasn’t cleared inside the Eagles’ penalty area, Luciano Becchio pounced and turned the ball home to give Leeds the advantage. Paul Green was next to find a gap in the Palace defence and he scored to make it two-nil. The lively Wilfried Zaha was looking to cause problems throughout as the visitors searched for a way back into the game, and eventually they found one as Peter Ramage scored a late header. It wasn’t enough though and Leeds held on for the points.
