Leeds United: Meslier, Ayling, Cooper, Koch, Alioski, Phillips, Dallas, Klich, Raphinha (Poveda 84), Harrison (Costa 81), Bamford (Rodrigo 90). Subs not used: Casilla, Roberts, Struijk, Davis.

Leeds caused problems in the early stages, but it was Everton who created the first major chance. Tom Davies broke forward down the right and his low cross was met by Abdoulaye Doucoure, but he was denied by a superb save from Illan Meslier in the Leeds goal and he also did enough to put off Dominic Calvert-Lewin with the follow up.

Brazilian Raphinha troubled the Everton back line in the opening period, driving forwards he played a low cross into the Blues box, which Jack Harrison, making his 100th Leeds appearance, reached, but could only put wide.

Richarlison forced Meslier into an easy save with a weak effort, before some lovely build up play from Leeds lead to Stuart Dallas teeing up Kalvin Phillips to strike from 25 yards, but he saw his deflected strike saved well by Jordan Pickford.

Pickford was again in action to deny Bamford after he’d been found in the Everton box by Mateusz Klich, before James Rodriguez had the ball in the net for the home side, after converting from a narrow angle when found at the back post, but the goal was chalked off for offside.

Michael Keane headed over from an Everton free-kick, before Pickford made a fine double save to keep the scores level, denying a Raphinha header at full stretch, before stopping a Harrison strike with another great stop.

Mason Holgate then saw a volley saved well by Meslier, before Richarlison was denied by another smart stop from the Frenchman after striking from 25 yards.

From the resulting corner Everton thought they had gone ahead when Richarlison headed home, but following a VAR check, it was ruled out for offside.

Leeds pressed for a lead in the final stages of the first period, first Jack Harrison hit the post with a header following a good counter attack, whilst Bamford and Mateusz Klich both fired just wide, with the two sides going in at the break with the game somehow still goal-less.

HALF TIME: Everton 0 – 0 Leeds United

The hosts made a bright start to the second period with Calvert-Lewin twice catching Leeds on the counterattack. With the first he was denied from a narrow angle by Meslier, and he fired wide the second time.

At the other end, Luke Ayling did well down the right, he found Bamford in the box who teed up Klich on the edge, but he couldn’t keep his shot down.

Harrison saw a strike from the edge of the box saved by Pickford, before Allan weaved his way up the pitch and into the Leeds box, but couldn’t outfox Meslier.

Leeds had the ball in the net in the 66th minute through Bamford, but he saw the goal ruled out, with Ezgjan Alioski unable to prevent the ball going dead in the build-up.

Leeds took the lead 13 minutes later through Raphinha, making his second start for the club. He picked up the ball 25 yards from goal and took his time, before firing a lovely strike into the bottom right corner, giving Pickford no chance.

Leeds United managed to hold on to their lead in the closing stages, taking home all three points in a thrilling game at Goodison Park.
