The Jack Charlton Stand

The Jack Charlton Stand

Leeds United & Hisense announce tribute to late legend.

Leeds United are proud to announce the East Stand at Elland Road will be named in honour of legendary defender Jack Charlton.

A giant of the game, Charlton sadly passed away in July at the age of 85, following a long-term illness.

His legacy will now be engrained at Elland Road forever and he joins fellow greats John Charles, Norman Hunter and Don Revie who also have stands named in their honour, along with the great Billy Bremner whose statue stands proudly outside.

Charlton joined Leeds at the age of 15 in 1950 as part of the ground staff and went on to spend 23 years at the club, amassing a club record 773 appearances.

‘Big Jack’ helped Leeds win promotion from the Second Division twice, as runners-up in 1955/56 and champions in 1963/64.

Under the great Don Revie, he was then part of the side which won the League Cup in 1968, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1968 and 1971, the First Division in 1968/69, the Charity Shield in 1969 and the FA Cup in 1972.

Charlton also played in every match during the 1966 World Cup, which England went on to win, defeating West Germany 4-2 in the final at Wembley.

The club would like to thank Official Partner Hisense, one of the world’s leading consumer electronic brands, with whom a two-year collaboration was announced earlier today.

As part of the new partnership agreement, Hisense, whose UK headquarters are in Leeds, secured naming rights and extensive full branding of the iconic East Stand and in tribute actioned its renaming to the Jack Charlton Stand from Friday 27th November 2020.

Angus Kinnear, CEO at Leeds United said: “The contribution made by Jack Charlton to Leeds United and the game of football is immeasurable.

“It is only right that we name a stand in his memory, he is an icon.

“We thank Hisense for giving us the go ahead to name the East Stand after Jack alongside their sponsorship and we are looking forward to the day fans return to Elland Road to celebrate the life of Jack along with Norman Hunter and Trevor Cherry.”

Howard Grindrod, Hisense UK’s Vice President commented: “Leeds United are a huge club with an iconic stadium, so we’re delighted to announce this profile partnership with one of the biggest clubs in England.

“We’re also incredibly proud to partner with a club that has such history and heritage.

“Jack Charlton is a true legend of the game, especially at Leeds United, and we’re grateful to play our part in ensuring that his contribution to the club and country is marked with this naming honour.

“We have a wealth of experience within the football sector internationally, and this is a fantastic opportunity to involve ourselves in a partnership with a Premier League club - even better that it’s a club on our doorstep.

“Leeds United pride themselves on attention to detail, which is something we feel resonates directly with Hisense and our product range.

“As excitement continues to build into the new season, we’re looking forward to kicking off our partnership, supporting the local community and being part of arguably the best league in the world.”
