Marcelo Bielsa: He will continue to be an idol

Head coach speaks to the media.

Marcelo Bielsa discussed multiple topics with the media, ahead of the trip to Everton in the Premier League this weekend.

Football suffered a great loss this week, as Diego Maradona passed away aged 60.

Bielsa has fond memories of his fellow countryman and paid tribute to him.

“He was for us, and will continue to be an idol,” said Bielsa.

“Given the fact he’s not here with us anymore brings us great sadness, we have lost an idol and that makes us feel weak.

"In terms of what he signifies to us in particular, Diego made us feel the fantasy that an idol makes you feel.

“The myth is that person, that makes us believe that what he does, we are all capable of doing it.

“That’s why the loss of an idol always hurts the people who are excluded the most.”

The Whites will travel to Goodison Park for the 5:30pm kick-off, looking to end a run of three games without a win.

Bielsa gave an update on team news ahead of the match and feels Saturday’s opposition will prove a tough test, with Carlo Ancelotti at the helm.

He said: “Jamie Shackleton, Pablo Hernandez and Diego Llorente are still not available, but the rest of the players are.

“I have respect and admiration for Ancelotti.

“First of all, he’s been wanted by all the best teams in the world.

“He has been chosen by some of the most powerful institutions in football which shows how good he is.

“The second thing is that he has triumphed everywhere he has been and the third thing is that he is a manager who is well respected by the players as well as his other colleagues.

“The last thing is that he’s never been criticised on his way of playing, it’s always an unselfish one and it is always valuable.

“To have all of this in one manager is not very frequent.”
