Leeds suffered defeat under the floodlights of Elland Road, against Leicester City. Goals from Harvey Barnes, Jamie Vardy and two from Youri Tielemans secured the three points for the visitors, with Stuart Dallas netting for the Whites.

Team news going into the match announced Liam Cooper’s return to the XI, along with Pablo Hernandez and Jamie Shackleton, who replaced Gjanni Alioski, Rodrigo and Pascal Struijk. Raphinha was also missing from the squad following an ankle injury. 

The opening stages saw two big chances. Helder Costa delivered an excellent cross, which Jack Harrison headed back across goal. Patrick Bamford arrived at the right moment but saw his header saved by Kasper Schmeichel in the Leicester net.

The ‘keeper instantly set his side off on the counter attack. Robin Koch gathered the ball but his pass back to Illan Meslier was intercepted by Vardy, who squared it for Barnes to fire home and put the Foxes ahead after just two minutes. (0-1)

The visitors were buoyed by this and were looking dangerous. Not too long after, Barnes came close again, this time Meslier managed to tip his effort over the bar. 

Leicester would double their lead in the 21st minute. Marc Albrighton crossed into the box, with the onrushing Vardy connecting well with it. His header was saved by Meslier but Tielemans was on hand to turn home the rebound. (0-2)

In the 38th minute, Leeds were denied a way back into the match by Schmeichel. Luke Ayling’s chipped pass through to Bamford was controlled, but the stopper rushed out and smothered the resulting shot from the striker and cleared again. That was to be the final chance for the Whites in the first half. 

HALF TIME: Leeds United 0-2 Leicester City

Marcelo Bielsa made a change at the break with Ian Poveda replacing Jamie Shackleton, making further changes tactically to his starting XI. Those changes paid off just three minutes into the half, with Costa now operating down the left-flank, he won a corner. 

The set-piece was played short by Harrison for Stuart Dallas to whip into the box. His cross evaded everyone and went straight in at the back post, reducing the deficit to just the one goal. (1-2)

Straight after pulling a goal back the Whites went agonisingly close to equalising following another corner. The ball came out from the set-piece to the edge of the box, where Pablo Hernandez controlled and curled an effort which came cannoning back off the crossbar. 

In the 76th minute Leeds were hit on the counter attack by the visitors once again. A slick pass from James Maddison cut the defence open and allowed second-half substitute Cengiz Ünder to chip the ball over the onrushing Meslier, for Vardy to fire into an open net. (1-3)

Tielemans scored his second and settled the contest in the 90th minute. Referee, Andre Marriner was advised to check the pitch side VAR monitor, which he did and awarded Leicester a spot-kick for a foul on Maddison. Tielemans made no mistake from the spot to get Leicester’s fourth. (1-4)

The full-time whistle would blow shortly after, ending what had been a disappointing evening for the Whites.
