Jack Charlton tributes

Jack Charlton tributes

Tributes to a legend.

Over the course of the weekend, tributes have flooded in for the great Jack Charlton, following his sad passing on Friday.

He enriched so many lives.  He was kind funny and a thoroughly genuine man and our family will miss him enormously.  Kate Wilkinson, Jack’s granddaughter.

Another Leeds and England great gone. Big Jack was one of a kind: funny, charismatic, argumentative and, like his friend and defensive partner Norman Hunter, one hell of a footballer as well as being hard as nails with a fighting spirit and hatred of losing that was second to none. He loved football but he loved many other things in life as well, not least fishing. The wonderful statue of him at Cork Airport in Ireland, where he was as much of a legend as he was in Leeds of course, shows him not as a footballer but in full fishing gear with a big smile on his face and holding a salmon. There will never be another like him. David Lascelles, Earl of Harewood & Honorary President of Leeds United.

Jack was the type of player and person that you need in a team to win a World Cup.  RIP old friend.  Sir Geoff Hurst, 1966 World Cup winner.

He took the country from really low down to something very, very special. He was fantastic for Ireland and I think Ireland was fantastic for Jack and they both complemented each other in that great run of success.  Jack never let anything faze him. He had a very direct way of playing and he wasn't a man that was concerned about the opposition. It was about us playing the way he believed was best for us. He kept things simple.  David O’Leary, former Leeds United manager and Republic of Ireland international.

Thank you Jack, you changed Irish football for the better.  You gave hope to young kids like myself that it was possible to play in World Cups and that we weren’t there to make the numbers up.  You will live forever in our [hearts] we’re all part of Jackie’s army. Sleep well Jack.  Robbie Keane, former Leeds United and Republic of Ireland international.

Saddened to hear that Jack Charlton has passed away. World Cup winner with England, manager of probably the best ever Ireland side and a wonderfully infectious personality to boot.  Gary Lineker, former England international.

We received the bad news on Saturday.  Everyone at Leeds United and all of the fans remember him.  He is part of the history of this club and the three points on Sunday were for everybody, for the fans and especially him and his memory.  I am sure he will help us in the next games from the sky and this win is for him. Pablo Hernandez, Leeds United.

It is a very sad moment for me and the Leeds United family as we mourn the loss of club legend Jack Charlton.  Over 23 years, he made a record 773 appearances for us and will always be remembered as a true club hero by all.  My thoughts are with Jack’s family and friends at this sad time. Rest in peace Jack. Andrea Radrizzani, Leeds United chairman.
