Leeds United fell to just a second home defeat of the Sky Bet Championship season as Sheffield Wednesday scored two late goals at Elland Road.

Luke Ayling fired an early warning to the Owls with a strike from the edge of the box, before Helder Costa fired just wide from 20 yards as the Whites made a bright start to the Yorkshire derby.

Julian Borner saw a long range strike deflect wide for Wednesday and from the resulting corner, Massimo Luongo had a free header, but put the chance wide.

Jack Harrison teed up Patrick Bamford to strike, but he didn’t make the desired contact with his effort, with Dawson making the save.

Wednesday had a good chance to go in front in the 16th minute when Jacob Murphy met an Adam Reach cross, but he put his volley wide from close range.

Two minutes later, Leeds also had a great chance from a free kick.  Kalvin Phillips delivered a lovely cross from the right flank and Harrison put his volley just wide of the post.

Leeds then saw a goal ruled out for offside, after Harrison superbly controlled a ball forward, before playing in Mateusz Klich who crossed for Bamford to head home, but Klich was ruled to have been offside in the build up.

Harrison played a neat one-two with Stuart Dallas as the Whites continued to press for an opener, striking on goal from the edge of the box and only a superb Dawson save denied him.

Borner fired a half volley over from 25 yards for the visitors, before Ben White played in Bamford, but he was denied from a narrow angle by Dawson.

In stoppage time in the first half, Leeds created another good chance when Barry Douglas teed up Helder Costa with a neat cut back, but the Portugal international blazed the chance over.

Half time: Leeds United 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Leeds had a great chance three minutes into the second half, Costa got to the byline and provided a drilled cross for Bamford, but he couldn’t find the target.

Murphy then got to the byline for the visitors and his ball across the face of goal was just inches away from being turned in by Sam Winnall.

In the 54th minute the deadlock was nearly broken from an Owls corner.  The ball pinged around the Leeds box, but he fired over when well placed.

Costa cut inside from the wing to strike but his attempt went over, whilst Klich had a curling effort well saved by Dawson.

Murphy saw a corner head towards goal, but was denied by Kiko Casilla in the Leeds goal, before a Reach cross headed goal-wards, going just over.

Luke Ayling delivered a good ball, but Harrison could only head over under pressure, before Alioski saw a shot blocked and Bamford headed over at an Hernandez corner.

With three minutes of normal time remaining, Sheffield Wednesday took the lead.  Murphy broke through on goal and found the net from a narrow angle.

The Owls then sealed the victory four minutes into stoppage time.  Reach got in behind the Leeds defence and teed up substitute Adthe Nuhiu who fired home.
