Leeds United fought from two goals down in the second half, but exited the Carabao Cup after losing out on penalties.

Head coach Marcelo Bielsa made changes from the 3-0 victory at Stoke City on Saturday, handing a debut to Mateusz Bogusz, whilst Alfie McCalmont made his first start.

Stoke had the first chance of the game, Stephen Ward’s cross was met by Sam Vokes, but he could only head straight at Kiko Casilla.

In the 11th minute Tom Ince did well to break into the Leeds box, his effort was well blocked for a corner and from the resulting set piece, Vokes headed over a Sam Clucas corner under pressure.

Leeds’ first opportunity came two minutes later, Jamie Shackleton’s cross fell into the path of Barry Douglas and his half volley from just inside the area was inches away from finding the top corner.

Danny Batth headed over for the visitors from a corner, whilst at the other end, Leif Davis met a Douglas free kick, but his header deflected safely into the arms of Jack Butland.

Leeds came so close to opening the scoring in the 25th minute, Gaetano Berardi did well to win possession, Shackleton did well finding Jack Clarke in the box and he laid the ball off to Eddie Nketiah to strike from the edge of the box, with his bending effort hitting the post.

Bogusz and Helder Costa then both saw strikes from distance go just wide as Leeds looked for a breakthrough.

The Whites then had two opportunities at corners, first Berardi saw a deflected strike go wide, before Nketiah headed just over.

Against the run of play, Stoke took the lead seven minutes from the break, with Batth heading home a Clucas corner.

The visitors doubled the lead four minutes later, when Tyrese Campbell played the ball across the face of goal and Sam Vokes turned in, ensuring Leeds went in two goals down at the break.

Half time: Leeds United 0-2 Stoke City

Marcelo Bielsa made three changes at the break, introducing Adam Forshaw, Jack Harrison and Ben White and Leeds made a bright start to the second period, Nketiah played a dangerous ball across the face of goal which just evaded Harrison.

Ince forced Casilla into an easy save, before Phillips delivered a free kick from the left flank and Davis headed just over when well placed.

Bogusz again went close to a debut goal in the 66th minute, he fired an effort from 25 yards, forcing Butland into a really good save.

However a minute later, Butland went from hero to zero.  He sliced a kick into his own defender which put Nketiah through on goal, he rounded Butland with cool, before slotting into the empty net.

Harrison nearly got Leeds level in the 71st minute, he hit a strike from 25 yards, which wasn’t far away from finding the top corner.

Douglas then whipped in a corner, Phillips flicked it on at the near post and Nketiah at the back post, couldn’t make contact to turn it home.

With nine minutes remaining, the equaliser came.  Davis delivered a lovely ball from the left flank, Nketiah couldn’t make contact at the near post, but Costa was on hand at the back post to head home his first Leeds goal.

Stoke went close in the closing stages when Vokes did well to get on a low cross, but couldn’t turn it home, before Phillips headed inches wide at a corner, meaning the game went to penalties.
