Patrick Bamford: We had to see it over the line

Striker on Wigan Athletic win.

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford spoke to LUTV following Saturday’s victory over Wigan Athletic.

A goal in either half from Bamford saw Leeds secure a 2-0 win at the DW Stadium and move to the top of the Championship after three league games.

Bamford was pleased to come away with the three points and feels the side have learnt a lot from last season.

“Coming here to a team like Wigan can be tricky and with the early sending off, it can almost make it more difficult,” said Bamford.

“Some people would think we were going to roll them over easy, but it is not like that because they are well organised, have some good players and a difficult style of play to handle sometimes.

“As you saw last year when we played them at home, we were one-nil up and they went down to 10 men and we somehow managed to lose.

“It wasn’t a place we could come and sit back, we had to keep our wits about us, keep control of the game and see it over the line and overall I think we did a professional job.

“Last year for a lot of the boys it was the first time they have been up and around it all season in the league, so I think this year the boys have learnt a lot as a team from that.

“We’ve taken on everything that the manager said last year, learnt it last year and obviously we have to build on that this year, so I think that along with the experience will help us see through these kind of games.”

Bamford also spoke about the two finishes which secured Leeds the victory.

“They’re probably the best goals I’ve ever scored,” joked Bamford.

“I don’t think I’ve scored two scrappier goals, but I’ll take them.

“It is all about being in the right place at the right time and there are strikers out there who have made an absolute killing with the amount of goals they score from that, so I’ll take them however they come.”
