Following a breakthrough 2018/19 season with Leeds United, Jamie Shackleton became the latest player to make his debut for England at this summer's Toulon Tournament.

After impressing head coach Paul Simpson, the midfielder quickly found himself starting against a strong Portugal side, narrowly losing 3-2.

"It was a dream come true," said Shackleton.

Standing there before the game, singing the national anthem, and then to play at right-back against Portugal was a such a special moment for me.

"They originally asked me to come to the training camp as a standby player, so I went out to France, and took part in the week of training.

"The plan was to return home when the tournament started, but after the final training session, the coaches said they wanted me in the squad to play, which was an honour.

"My family were buzzing and my mum was really proud, with the game being shown live on television it was great, as everyone was able to sit around and watch it.

"I really enjoyed the experience, there was only Tom [Pearce] there that I knew and had played with before, but all of the lads were really nice, and welcomed me into the group.

"I feel I adapted quite well to what the coaches were requiring from us and hopefully I can continue to play with them.

"The aim now is to work my way up through the different age groups with England."

Enjoying a two week break following his time with the Young Lions, Shackleton is now back at Thorp Arch, and fully immersed in Leeds United's pre-season schedule.

He said: "We've started as we mean to go on, we're running, we're training, we're doing the drills and back playing football.

"It's been tough, but that's how it should be.

"Hopefully I can build upon last season, when I cam in last summer I was fit and wanted to give everything in training and that's exactly how I'll be this season."

"The aim is to get more game time, hopefully I can get a place in the starting XI, keep hold of it and play as much as possible throughout the year."
