Derby County: Memorable matches

Derby County: Memorable matches

We look back at five memorable encounters.

Ahead of Saturday's Sky Bet Championship Play-Off semi-final first leg between Leeds United and Frank Lampard's Derby County at Pride Park, we look at 11 players who have played for both the Whites and the Rams...

Sunday 7th January 1996- Derby County 2 Leeds United 4

Leeds visited the Baseball Ground in the FA Cup Third Round.  Marco Gabbiadini broke the deadlock, before Paul Simpson quickly got Derby’s second a minute later. Gary Speed halved the deficit with a strike from inside the box, before Brian Deane then got Leeds level with a tap-in from close range. Gary McAllister edged Leeds in front with 90 minutes on the clock and Tony Yeboah ensured Leeds entered the Fourth Round of the FA Cup.

Saturday 8th November 1997- Leeds United 4 Derby County 3

Leeds hosted Derby in 1997 in a Premier League clash. Derby went ahead very early on as Dean Sturridge got his first of the afternoon. Sturridge grabbed his second with a delicate chip over Nigel Martyn and Aljosa Asanovic then looked to have put the game to bed with a penalty, but Leeds fought back as Rod Wallace pulled one back. Leeds then pulled back a second and pushed for the equaliser and eventually got it through a Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink penalty. Then in added time and Lee Bowyer completed a miraculous comeback and got Leeds the three points.

Sunday 15th March 1998- Derby County 0 Leeds United 5

Leeds visited Pride Park looking to complete the double over Derby. The game couldn’t have started any better for Leeds as Gary Kelly floated in a free kick which Jacob Laursen smashed into his own net. Gunnar Halle doubled the lead with a neat finish before Lee Bowyer made it three with a powerful strike shortly before the break. After Leeds grabbed a fourth, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink sealed the game with a close range finish.

Saturday 11th August 2018- Derby County 1 Leeds United 4

Leeds travelled to Pride Park for their first away trip of the current season and it was another game to remember. Leeds started brightly and got the scoring underway after only five minute with Mateusz Klich unleashing a thunderous strike which gave Scott Carson with no chance.  Derby hit back though via a Tom Lawrence free-kick. In the 21st minute, Leeds regained the lead, Ezgjan Alioski whipped in a cross from the right and Kemar Roofe rose highest to nod home. In the second half and Leeds continued to attack and nearly made it three but Carson denied Roofe and Luke Ayling with a brilliant double save.  Leeds' efforts were rewarded though, Roofe got his second of the afternoon with a superb solo effort, before the icing was then put on the cake when Pablo Hernandez crossed for Alioski who headed home to seal a wonderful performance.

Friday 11th January 2019- Leeds United 2 Derby County 0

In our most recent meeting with Derby County in January at Elland Road, Leeds produced a fine display to come away with all three points. Leeds went ahead after just 20 minutes as Jack Clarke teed up Kemar Roofe and he slotted past the goalkeeper. The Whites had chances to double their lead in the first half but it wasn’t until two minutes after the break Leeds made their dominance count. Clarke was once again instrumental in the goal as he whipped in a cross which Carson spilled straight to Ezgjan Alioski and he put it on a plate for Jack Harrison.
