Wigan Athletic: Memorable matches

We look back at five encounters.

Ahead of Good Friday's Sky Bet Championship clash between Leeds United and Wigan Athletic at Elland Road, we look back at five memorable encounters between the two sides.

Sunday 15th March 1987- Wigan Athletic 0 Leeds United 2

Leeds went to Springfield Park looking to seal a place in the FA Cup semi-final for the first time in 10 years in March 1987.  There were lots of chances for both teams in the first half, however neither side could break the deadlock. John Stiles got Leeds ahead after 58 minutes with a curling right footed shot from just outside the box, before Micky Adams sealed the victory with a dazzling solo effort, booking Leeds’ last four tie against Coventry City.

Tuesday 17th January 2006- Leeds United 3 Wigan Athletic 3 (4-2 Wigan Win On Penalties)

Leeds hosted Wigan Athletic in the third round of the FA Cup and it went the distance as Wigan progressed. Andreas Johansson opened the scoring for Wigan in the 24th minute but Leeds hit back before half time through David Healy.  Jason Roberts got Wigan back in front five minutes into the second half, before Healy got his second of the game from the penalty spot. The game went to extra time and Roberts got the Latics in front, however Gary Kelly scored with a superb volley with just five minutes of extra time to go and the game went to penalties. Roberts scored the decisive penalty for Wigan and sent them through to the next round.

Tuesday 4th December 2013- Leeds United 2 Wigan Athletic 0

Ross McCormack notched a double as Leeds won comfortably against the travelling Latics. McCormack’s first half strike gave Leeds the lead after just 15 minutes.  Leeds then searched for the second goal but were denied on several occasions by Scott Carson. Late on in the second half McCormack grabbed his second of the evening and made sure Leeds were victorious.

Saturday 7th March 2015- Wigan Athletic 0 Leeds United 1

Leeds travelled over the Pennines to face relegation threatened Wigan Athletic. Leeds midfielder Alex Mowatt produced a special strike to give Leeds all three points, increasing his tally to eight goals. Marco Silvestri pulled off a brilliant save late on from a James McClean free kick, whilst Leeds also had a penalty appeal turned down in the first half as Billy Sharp was brought down.

Saturday 4th November 2018- Wigan Athletic 1 Leeds United 2

Leeds last visited the DW Stadium back in November. Against the run of play Wigan defender Reece James opened the scoring from a curling free-kick. Leeds hit back immediately after as Mateusz Klich set up Pablo Hernandez who tapped home from close range. Leeds dominated proceedings and one minute into the second half capitalised on a bad mistake at the back from Wigan, with Kemar Roofe walking it into an empty net. Leeds had chances to put the game to bed as Hernandez hit the post and Jamie Shackleton couldn’t convert the rebound, however, Leeds hung on and secured the three points.
