Ahead of Saturday's Sky Bet Championship clash with Sheffield United at Elland Road, we look at five memorable encounters between the two sides.

Monday 16^th April 1990- Leeds United 4 Sheffield United 0

After a 2-2 draw in the previous meeting between the two sides on Boxing Day 1989 at Bramall Lane, the two sides came together on Easter Monday at Elland Road.  It was the Whites who wiped the Blades aside with a fine 4-0 victory, to keep up their charge for the Second Division title and promotion to the top flight.  The deadlock was broken after 17 minutes when Gordon Strachan tapped home a Chris Kamara rebound.  After the break Gary Speed found Lee Chapman to double the lead, before Strachan added a third from the spot.  Speed then rounded off the win with a great goal, which went with the famous John Helm commentary: “Go on Gary Speed, get one yourself son.”

Saturday 5^th October 1991- Leeds United 4 Sheffield United 3

Leeds and Sheffield United played out a goal-fest at Elland Road back in 1991, with both clubs enjoying top flight football for a second season after both were promoted in 1990.  On a windy day at Elland Road, the Whites made a flying start, when Steve Hodge converted after just five minutes following a long throw by Mel Sterland.  Sterland then netted a free-kick to double the lead, before he added a second from the penalty spot after Tony Dorigo was fouled.  After the break Hodge made it four, before a Sheffield fight back.  Goals from Jamie Hoyland, Tony Agana and Carl Bradshaw set up a tense final seven minutes, but the Whites held on for victory.

Sunday 26th April 1992- Sheffield United 2  Leeds United 3

For most Leeds United supporters, this Yorkshire derby is undoubtedly the most memorable game as Leeds clinched the First Division title, by winning 3-2 at Bramall Lane. In front of 32,000, Sheffield United got the first goal of the game through veteran striker Alan Cork.  Leeds levelled though, through a quite bizarre goal, which pinged around the Blades penalty area, before deflecting in off Rod Wallace.  After the break, Leeds took full control and with the title in sight Jon Newsome headed home from a tight angle following a Gary McAllister free kick. Leeds were pegged back just minutes later as Lee Chapman deflected the ball into his own net and with the game in the balance, Leeds desperately needed a goal. Step up Sheffield United captain, Brian Gayle who was the hero for Leeds as he bizarrely headed into his own net following pressure from Eric Cantona and Wallace. Leeds hung on for three massive points and became League champions for the first time in 18 years.

Saturday 18th September 1993- Leeds United 2 Sheffield United 1

In a feisty Premier League affair, Leeds United came out on top at Elland Road.  Gary McAllister scored after four minutes and set the tone for the remainder of this clash. Leeds then doubled the advantage after 29 minutes as Scotsman Gordon Strachan got on the score sheet. Sheffield United pulled one back after Gary Kelly put the ball in his own net. However, Leeds held on and the score stayed the same for the remainder of the second half.

Saturday, 1 December 2018- Sheffield United 0 Leeds United 1

Leeds’ most recent fixture with Sheffield United came at Bramall Lane last November.  Early chances for both sides came and went as Billy Sharp and Kemar Roofe missed opportunities respectively. With the game looking like a stalemate, there was late drama.  Half-time substitute Jack Clarke made a huge game winning impact as he teed up Pablo Hernandez who tapped home into an empty net with eight minutes remaining. Leeds held on for a vital three points despite a late onslaught from the hosts, including a Conor Washington overhead kick which struck the bar.
