SWANSEA CITY: MEMORABLE MATCHES

SWANSEA CITY: MEMORABLE MATCHES

We look at five classic encounters.

Ahead of Wednesday’s Sky Bet Championship fixture between Leeds United and Swansea City at Elland Road, we look at five memorable matches between the Whites and the Jacks.

Saturday 3rd January 1970- Leeds United 2 Swansea Town 1

Reigning First Division champions Leeds had a big scare when they faced Fourth Division Swansea Town in the Third Round of the FA Cup at Elland Road.   David Gwyther gave Swansea the advantage, but with 30 minutes remaining, the Swans were reduced to 10 men after Mel Nurse clashed with Allan Clarke.  10 minutes after the sending off, Leeds levelled from through a Johnny Giles penalty after David Lawrence had handled and Mick Jones headed home a Terry Cooper corner, to ensure the Whites progressed.

Saturday 16th January 1982- Leeds United 2 Swansea City 0

Back in January 1982, Leeds and Swansea City (the football club changed their name to refelect Swansea’s new status as a city) faced each other in the top flight.   The Swans, had won promotion to the top flight in the previous season for the first time and visited Elland Road on a snowy January afternoon.  Leeds took the lead when Arthur Graham broke into the Swansea box and played the ball across goal and Byron Stevenson was on hand to convert from a narrow angle.  The win was sealed after the break, when an Eddie Gray free-kick was headed back across goal by Paul Hart and Aidan Butterworth was on hand to bundle the ball home.

Saturday 22nd September 2007- Leeds 2 Swansea 0

Jermaine Beckford and David Prutton scored one each as Leeds climbed out the relegation zone and made it a record start to the season, with seven straight league wins.  Leeds who had been deducted 15 points at the start of season faced Swansea who sat in eighth before this encounter and on paper  it was a stern test for Leeds.  The Whites took the lead in the 60th minute when Beckford broke the deadlock for Leeds from a well worked set-piece and five minutes later, Prutton doubled the lead with a strike from outside the box.

Saturday 11th September 2010- Leeds 2 Swansea 1

Leeds’ last win at Elland Road against Swansea was nine years ago.  Luciano Becchio and Bradley Johnson both grabbed goals against the Welsh side to send Leeds back into the Play-Off spots in the Championship.  Scotsman Stephen Dobbie put Swansea ahead early on.  Johnson struck back after the half time break with a long range strike.  Argentine favourite Becchio then put Leeds ahead with a typical poacher’s goal and the win for Leeds ensured Swansea’s Elland Road drought continued.

Tuesday 21st August, 2018- Swansea City 2 Leeds United 2

The last meeting between these two sides was a televised fixture at the Liberty Stadium back in August.  It was only the fourth game of the season and Leeds headed into it top of the league and unbeaten.  Leeds-born Oliver McBurnie opened the scoring for the Swans, but some impressive work down the right hand side from debutant Jamie Shackleton resulted in Kemar Roofe tapping home the equaliser. Just after the break McBurnie grabbed his second with a towering header restoring Swansea’s lead, but substitute Patrick Bamford set up Pablo Hernandez late on and he earned Leeds a deserved point against his former club.
