MARCELO BIELSA: THE PROPOSAL I CHOSE WAS NOT THE RIGHT ONE

Head coach on Birmingham City defeat.

Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa spoke to the media following the 2-1 home defeat to Birmingham City.

Bielsa suffered his first league defeat in charge of the Whites, ending an eight game unbeaten run in the division.

Bielsa took full responsibility for the loss, believing he made an error with his tactics.

“The proposal I chose at the beginning of this game was not the right one,” said Bielsa.

“Kalvin Phillips played in front of Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper, the call was to make the link thanks to Kalvin from the defence to attack, but we couldn’t reach this goal.

“In the first 30 minutes we were not fluid in moving the ball and we didn’t feel safe because we didn’t cover the ball well.

“Kalvin Phillips had to assume the consequences of a mistake that I made.

“When we did this substitution, in the last hour of the game, we more than dominated the opponent, we didn’t suffer any situations and we created chances to score.

“The game was very tough, it was not easy for us to move the ball and we made many technical mistakes and we were not fresh enough to develop our game and style.

“The spaces were smaller and the small spaces exhausted our offensive players.

“We played in a manner which could have allowed us to get another result, but we can’t be satisfied with how we built the game.

“The opponent is a difficulty for us that we have to resolve, we were better than our opponent, but we should have demonstrated that by getting another result.

“If we had have played well, instead of having eight chances to score, we would have had 20 chances to score and the feelings would be different.

“It is hard to analyse a game and talk about what you deserve, when the performance is not good.

“But even if we didn’t play well, you deserve or not the result at the end of the game.

“To make conclusions about this loss, I would take into account the mistake that I made at the beginning, because when I corrected the mistake, the rival had already scored two goals and our team was less confident.

“It is a high price to pay when you make a tactical mistake.”
