MARCELO BIELSA: NOBODY HAD TO CONVINCE ME

Head coach speaks to the media.

Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa spoke to the media on Monday at his first press conference since being announced as the new boss of the Whites.

The 62-year-old was introduced to the press by chairman Andrea Radrizzani at Elland Road, who admitted it was an honour to have Bielsa on board.

Bielsa admitted he has already carried out a thorough analysis of the club, but refused to be drawn on long term targets.

“It was a case of me convincing myself, nobody had to convince me, I was convinced by the strength of Leeds United as a club,” said Bielsa.

“I believe the players have enough ability about them to be able to take on board what I am saying and put it into action on the field.

“It is imprudent to promise something that you can’t be totally certain of, but at the same time it would be impossible not to be dreaming about it (taking Leeds back to the Premier League) happening.

“To give sense to any type of project like this, what drives you is having that desire, hope and belief that you manage to achieve what everyone wants.

“With the history that this club has, everybody knows exactly what represents success or failure at the end of a season.

“If you try to predict the future, you are almost becoming a demagogue rather than a football coach, so I don’t think it is convenient to make great statements of intent at this stage, it is much better to be reasonable and measured.

“I’ve seen all 51 games that Leeds United played last season and the two games in Asia, so I have opinions and in my head I’ve already made my mind up about all of the players and drawn lots of conclusions from watching the footage.

“Leeds United had one of the highest attendances in the Championship last season and take huge amounts of support away with them and I know the team means an awful lot to the people of this city.”
