PAUL HECKINGBOTTOM: WE HAVE TO CHANGE THE MENTALITY

Head coach on Norwich City defeat.

Leeds United head coach Paul Heckingbottom spoke to the press following Saturday’s defeat to Norwich City.

A deflected Wes Hoolahan strike and an effort from Josh Murphy cancelled out Kalvin Phillips’ opener at Carrow Road to secure the Canaries a 2-1 victory.

United’s head coach was disappointed with the result and the number of challenges his side lost out on during the match.

“It was frustrating, there were few chances, but I felt the game was there for us for the taking,” said Heckingbottom.

“We got in front and we needed to be better with our game management, particularly in the last two minutes of the first half.

“If Norwich were going to get back into the game, I felt it was going to be through something like the deflected goal which they got.

“There were too many loose balls and we didn’t win enough of the 50/50’s, I know when we look at the physical stats that the boys have run, but I know when I look at the challenges and duels that we won’t be coming out on top and we have to change that mentality.

“We want to be winners and we need to be able to win games the hard way and the ugly way and swing momentum in games with a big tackle or a big header and that is the disappointing thing and the bit which is frustrating me at the minute.

“Everyone has tough moments in this league, but character and drive gets you through those moments and that is what we have not had.

“We have talent, we have good ball players and I know we can look a good side, but to win more games, you have to have more than that, we have to change the whole mentality of the group and that is the focus.”
