PAUL HECKINGBOTTOM: I’M DELIGHTED PABLO HAS CHOSEN TO STAY

Head coach on Hernandez deal.

Leeds United head coach Paul Heckingbottom spoke to the media, following the news Pablo Hernandez has signed a new contract with the club.

The Spaniard has put pen to paper on a new two year deal, tying him down at Elland Road until at least the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

Hernandez has been one of the first names on the team-sheet since Heckingbottom’s arrival in February and United’s head coach is thrilled that he is staying.

“I’m delighted Pablo Hernandez has signed a new contract,” said Heckingbottom.

“I’d been asking a lot of questions, because he was out of contract and one of our top performers, so we are delighted he has chosen to stay.

“A lot of teams wanted him and he would have been a great asset to any squad, but we have managed to keep him.

“Pablo wants to be part of something, he is not a player chasing money, he just wants to enjoy his football, feel valued and wants to achieve something.

“Pablo has shown he is a team player and that he has the quality to change and win games, he has not just done it this season, but for a number of years, so we are really pleased.

“If you watch him train, he is one of the fittest players in the squad and he looks after himself, he is a good role model in that respect.

“Whilst we want to get the most out of him on the pitch, we also want to use his experience off the pitch too because he has a lot to pass on.

“We could give him a bit more responsibility in that respect, it is something we have spoken about and something he is looking forward to doing.”

Hernandez has been nominated for the club’s 2018 Player of the Year Award for his performances throughout the campaign and the ceremony takes place on Friday 4th May.
