Leeds United 2 (Pearce 17, Alioski 50) Barnsley 1 (O’Connor O.G 36)

A first goal for Tom Pearce and a second half effort from Ezgjan Alioski secured Leeds a Yorkshire derby victory at Elland Road and a first double success against over Barnsley since 1997-98 season.

Head coach Paul Heckingbottom re-called Pontus Jansson and Samuel Saiz to the starting line-up, whilst Adam Forshaw and Liam Cooper returned to the bench following injury.

Gary Gardner had the first chance of the game but his dipping volley went well over the crossbar.

At the other end, Alioski had a great chance to open the scoring when he picked up a loose ball and went through on goal, but his chipped shot went just wide.

Leeds opened the scoring in the 17^th minute, Pearce picked up a loose ball and drove up the pitch, before firing into the bottom right corner superbly from 25 yards.

Leeds then went looking for number two, but Alioski was denied by Davies from close range at a narrow angle.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell then had to be alert to deny a dangerous cross from Adam Hammill, before Bradley Potts tested the Leeds stopper once more.

Barnsley equalised nine minutes before the break, Ezekiel Fryers crossed from the left, Pontus Jansson got a slight touch with a header, before hitting Paudie O’Connor and finding the net.

The visitors could have gone in ahead, but Peacock-Farrell made an outstanding one handed save to deny Connor Mahoney after he weaved into the box.

Half Time: Leeds United 1-1 Barnsley

Leeds regained the lead five minutes into the second half, Pearce found Kemar Roofe on the left and he got to the byline and broke into the box, before playing the ball across goal to Alioski who fired home.

Barnsley thought they made it 2-2 moments later, when Oliver McBurnie turned the ball past Peacock-Farrell, but the assistant referee flagged for offside.

Roofe then put another decent ball into the box, this time from the right side.  Alioski met it, but his shot was deflected wide for a corner.

Alioski then tried his luck from the edge of the box, but could only fire wide of the goal.

Leeds had a huge left off when Barnsley substitute Kieffer Moore met a Hammill cross, only to miss from two yards out.

The Tykes thought they had a penalty when Hammill went down in the Leeds box under a challenge from Matthew Pennington, with three minutes of normal time remaining,  but the winger was booked for simulation.

In stoppage time, Pablo Hernandez tried his luck from just inside the Barnsley area, to seal the win, but his effort curled wide.

The Whites then saw out the victory, to pick up the three points, to make it three games unbeaten at Elland Road.
