Leeds United 1 (Grot 86) Sheffield Wednesday 2 (Nuhiu 70, 90+1)

A Stoppage time goal from Atdhe Nuhiu goal gave Sheffield Wednesday the spoils in a snowy Yorkshire derby at Elland Road.

Head coach Paul Heckingbottom handed a debut to 19-year- old Tom Pearce his debut, after previously featuring in the matchday squad.

The visitors had the first chance of the game inside seven minutes, Bailey Peacock-Farrell was called into action, saving at feet of Adam Reach following a through ball from Lucas Joao.

Adam Forshaw went close for the Whites from a well worked corner, his curling shot deflected wide.

Peacock-Farrell  was once again in action, this time denying Reach with a long range effort with a good save.

Leeds almost took the lead from a cleverly worked free kick, Pablo Hernandez looked set to shoot, but instead passed the ball to Forshaw who then found Caleb Ekuban in the box, but he saw his attempt denied by Wednesday stopper Joe Wildsmith.

Some more good build up play from Hernandez and Ekuban, led to an opportunity for Ezgjan Alioski in the Sheffield Wednesday box, but Frederico Venancio made a last ditch challenge to deny him.

Ekuban then had another opportunity,  following a corner, the ball was headed back into the Owls box, but the striker could only fire a half volley over the crossbar.

At the other end, Nuhiu tried his luck with an effort from the edge of the box, which deflected safely into the arms of Peacock-Farrell.

Sheffield Wednesday thought they had taken the lead on the stroke off half time following a free-kick, but Sam Hutchinson’s header was ruled out for offside.

Half Time: Leeds United 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

United forward Alioski had the first sight of goal in the second period, he fired just over from 20 yards.

Sam Hutchinson then had a chance for the visitors but sliced his shot well wide of Peacock-Farrell’s goal.

Alioski, who was troublesome down the right wing throughout the afternoon, put in a good low cross which found Ekuban, but he couldn’t get a shot away..

Hernandez almost broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, he went for goal with a free-kick from 25 yards, with his effort hitting the side netting.

Nuhiu threatened for the visitors, his curling shot from 25 yards landed on top of the Leeds net, before Gaetano Berardi threatened at the other end, seeing his shot go inches wide.

The Owls took the lead in the 70th minute, Jack Hunt’s cross from the right was met by Reach who saw his header hit the post and the ball fell to Nuhiu was in the right place at the right time to slot home the rebound.

Hernandez then came close to equalising for Leeds but Wildsmith spread himself well to deny the Spaniard.

Forshaw then drove forward and fired an effort from the edge of the box, but his shot went wide of the post.

Leeds did get a reward after persistent pressure, a Hernandez corner came back out to him and his second ball into the box was superb and substitute Jay-Roy Grot headed home his first Leeds United goal to equalise.

However the Owls were not to be denied the three points,  when Nuhiu broke through on goal and slotted past Peacock-Farrell in stoppage time.
