MATCH PREVIEW: BIRMINGHAM CITY V LEEDS UNITED

MATCH PREVIEW: BIRMINGHAM CITY V LEEDS UNITED

We look ahead to Saturday's clash.

Leeds United head to St Andrew's on Saturday, looking for a fifth Sky Bet Championship victory in a row against Birmingham City.  Thomas Christiansen's side are undefeated in six games heading to the Midlands and are looking to keep up their impressive form over the festive period.  United come up against a team they have already beaten this season at Elland Road and it has proved to be a difficult campaign for the Blues so far.  Birmingham have scored just 12 goals in the Championship, and come into the game, having failed to win since mid-November.

Leeds United 3 (Wood 14,67, Pedraza 81)

Last time the two sides came head to head at St Andrew's, Leeds ran out 3-1 winners.  A brilliant lob from Chris Wood gave Leeds the lead, following a fine pass from Luke Ayling.  Robert Tesche hit the crossbar for Birmingham, before Craig Gardner made it 1-1 with a 25 yard strike in the 63rd minute.  However it took Wood less than four minutes to restore Leeds’ lead after he tapped in from a square ball by Kalvin Phillips and loan man Alfonso Pedraza then wrapped up the victory, with a neat strike.

Team news

Samuel Saiz could be in contention to return for Leeds, having missed United's two previous games against Hull City and Burton Albion with injury.  The game may also come too soon for Stuart Dallas, whilst Caleb Ekuban is still ruled out for a month.  Birmingham's Marc Roberts, Che Adams and Isaac Vassell are unlikely to feature with injuries, but the Blues are boosted by the return of forward Sam Gallagher, who missed the Boxing Day defeat against Norwich City through suspension.

The key battle

David Stockdale v Felix Wiedwald

A few eye brows were raised when Birmingham managed to complete the signing of goalkeeper Stockdale early into the summer transfer market from Brighton & Hove Albion, who last season won promotion to the Premier League.  Many tipped Birmingham to do well at the start of the campaign, but it hasn't worked out and Stockdale will need to be in top form, to stop United from scoring, with the Whites having now scored in each of their past 12 Championship matches.  Wiedwald in the Leeds goal, is looking for a third clean sheet in four games at St Andrew's and has played a key part in the last three victories for Leeds and put in a man of the match performance against Hull City.
