Brentford 3 (Maupay 22, Barbet 85, Woods 90+3) Leeds United 1 (Alioski 67)

Leeds United suffered a fourth defeat in a row in all competitions, as Brentford ran out 3-1 winners at Griffin Park.

The home side made a good start to the match, Ollie Watkins won a header at the back post, which Pontus Jansson had to sweep up, before Nico Yennaris fired a long range effort wide.

Brentford then went close from a free-kick, 25 yards from goal, which Yoann Barbet fired just wide.

United’s first opportunity came in the 16th minute, Ezgjan Alioski forced Daniel Bentley into action with an effort from the edge of the box.

Samuel Saiz then picked up a loose pass before driving into the box, but he opted to play a through ball, rather than shooting for goal and Bentley was equal to it.

Brentford took the lead in the 23rd minute, goalkeeper Andy Lonergan spilt a cross and Neal Maupay headed home.

The Whites had a great opportunity to level seven minutes before the break, Pierre-Michel Lasogga latched onto a long punt forward and tried to lob the out-coming Bentley, but could only put his effort over the bar.

Just before the break, Brentford were awarded a penalty following a sliding challenge by Pontus Jansson on Maupay.  Watkins stepped up to take the spot kick, but could only fire over the bar into the Leeds fans, as the Whites went in just one goal behind at half time.

Half Time: Brentford 1-0 Leeds United

Thomas Christiansen introduced Kemar Roofe and Pablo Hernandez at the break to try and get Leeds back into the game and United started brightly, Gaetano Berardi got to the byline and floated in a lovely cross, but Ezgjan Alioski couldn’t find the target with his header.

The two substitutes then combined, with Hernandez putting a cross in for Roofe, which the forward headed on target, forcing Bentley into action.

Brentford almost added a second when Watkins was teed up on the edge of the box, but his effort hit the crossbar.

Ronaldo Vieira nearly leveled the scores with a wonderful strike from 25 yards, but he was denied by a super save from Bentley.

A minute after Vieira’s strike, Leeds did equalise, Liam Cooper sent Berardi down the left flank and his high cross was spilt by Bentley and Alioski headed home, beyond two Brentford players on the line.

Buoyed by the goal, Leeds almost went in front, Saiz charged upfield, before firing just wide from 25 yards and Roofe saw another header saved after being picked out by Hernandez.

From a free-kick, Hernandez delivered and Cooper was free in the box, but he couldn’t make contact with the cross, whilst Saiz teed up Vieira who saw a deflected strike well stopped by Bentley.

Yennaris then almost put Brentford ahead, but his 30 yard strike was again denied by the woodwork.

However Florian Jozefzoon won the Bees a free-kick on the edge of the box and Barbet found the net with a low curling effort.

Luke Ayling could only head wide a dangerous Hernandez free-kick, before Ryan Woods sealed the Brentford victory in the third minute of added time, with a thunderous effort after being teed up on the edge of the box.
