Leeds United 3 (Lasogga 13, Phillips 32, Bialkowski OG 67) Ipswich Town 2 (McGoldrick 30, Garner 71)

Goals from Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Kalvin Phillips, along with an own goal from Bartosz Bialkowski ensured Leeds United extended their winning run at Elland Road to four games.

Head coach Thomas Christiansen was boosted with the return of captain Liam Cooper, whilst fellow defender Matthew Pennington was included on the bench, the first time he has made the squad after suffering injury in the first game of the season against Bolton Wanderers.

Leeds made a good start to the match, putting a lot of pressure on Ipswich early into the game and the Whites took the lead inside 13 minutes when Conor Shaughnessy played a fantastic through ball which split the Tractor Boys defence and Lasogga latched on to it and found the bottom left corner.

Ipswich’s first opportunity came seven minutes later from a corner, the forward could only head over the bar.

Luke Ayling tried his luck from range when the ball fell kindly to him 25 yards from goal, but he could only fire a half volley wide.

A Shaughnessy clearance was then blocked by David McGoldrick, he fired the ball across goal, but nobody could get on the end of it.

The visitors continued to pressure from set-pieces and equalised on the 30 minute mark.  Garner won Leeds a free-kick and McGoldrick headed home Grant Ward’s free-kick.

The Whites provided an immediate response to Ipswich’s leveller and regained the lead less than two minutes later.  Samuel Saiz played the ball into the box and Phillips beat Bialkowski to the ball, before superbly rounding the Tractor Boys goalkeeper and slotting home.

Late into the half, Pablo Hernandez played an exquisite through ball with his heal to send Saiz through on goal, but he saw his eventual attempt well blocked by Luke Chambers.

In first half stoppage time, Ipswich defender Chambers almost levelled from another Ipswich set-piece, but Vurnon Anita headed away off the line at the corner, to ensure Leeds went into the break in front.

After the break McGoldrick played Tristan Nydam into the box, but Cooper made a great sliding block to deny him from levelling the scores.

Just before the hour mark, Ipswich McGoldrick nearly equalised for a second time, he met Ward’s low cross at the back post, but luckily for Leeds, his effort deflected over the bar.

At the other end, Eunan O’Kane put a good cross into the box and Jordan Spence almost headed into his own net, with his clearance going just wide.

Lasogga then cushioned the ball to send Saiz into the box, but Chambers made a last ditch tackle to stop the Spaniard.

United’s German forward Lasogga then found Alioski and sent him into the box on the right, from a narrow angle, he shot at goal, with his effort going inches wide.

The Whites went further in front in the 67th minute.  Pablo Hernandez’s corner was on target and Bialkowski spilled the ball over his own line and goal-line technology confirmed Leeds now had a two goal cushion.

Four minutes later however, the visitors hit back, Felix Wiedwald could only palm Dominic Iorfa’s cross into the path of Garner who tapped home, to reduce United’s advantage.

Ipswich threw the kitchen sink at Leeds in the closing stages, but the Whites held out and Saiz could have made it more comfortable for United in stoppage time, but his curling effort from inside of the box, went just wide of the top corner.

The win was Leeds’ fourth in succession at Elland Road in all competitions and got the Whites back to winning ways after last week’s defeat at Millwall.
