NEW ZEALAND MAKE EXIT

Confederations Cup comes to an end for Wood.

Chris Wood’s 2016/17 campaign came to an end over the weekend as New Zealand exited the FIFA Confederations Cup at the group stage.

The All Whites lost their first game 2-0 against the hosts, Russia, courtesy of an own goal from Michael Boxall and Fyodor Smolov’s strike.

In game two Chris Wood gave New Zealand a first half lead, with the United forward superbly finishing following a through ball from Clayton Lewis.  However efforts from Raul Jimenez and Oribe Peralta in the second half gave Mexico victory, despite New Zealand hitting the crossbar late on.

New Zealand’s tournament came to a close on Saturday, as Portugal ran out 4-0 winners, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani getting on the scoresheet to ensure qualification to the semi-final, condemning the All Whites to finishing bottom of Group A.

The striker will now be given an extended period of time off, before rejoining Thomas Christiansen’s side for pre-season.
