GARRY MONK: I KNOW WHAT THE CLUB NEEDS

Head coach on Wigan draw and campaign.

Leeds United head coach Garry Monk spoke to LUTV following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic.

A Chris Wood penalty, his 30th goal of the campaign and the 100th in his career earned Leeds a point at the DW Stadium.

Leeds were backed by over 4,700 supporters in Lancashire, as Leeds ended the Sky Bet Championship season on 75 points.

“I thought we started the game well, but the first time Wigan got into our half they scored and it was a poor goal for us to concede,” said Monk.

“In the second half we came out well, like we have done so often throughout the season and got the goal back, from there I thought we were going to push on and get the next one.

“It was a draw in the end, but we tried to win the game, you could see our intention again and the effort and commitment was very clear for everyone to see.

“Chris Wood scored his 30th goal of the season and he joins some illustrious names who have achieved that feat, which he should be very proud of.

“It is a fantastic achievement for him, we tried to make Chris more aggressive and more of a leader, along with utilising the qualities we know he has.

“The scenes at the end of the game, along with so many others at Elland Road and away from home this season, show the potential this club has.

“We are all connected together with our fans, there is a real togetherness and unity, there is a fantastic relationship with the fans and the team and that is how all clubs should be.”

Full back Charlie Taylor missed out on the matchday squad at Wigan and Monk explained his omission.

He said: “Charlie Taylor refused to play the game and I think he has been terribly advised in this instance.

“He is a very young player and he is a fantastic lad, but he has made a mistake.

“From the point of view from the club and myself as a manger, it is unacceptable for a player to refuse to play a game for Leeds United, you can’t have that.

“This season has been a shame for Charlie, he has huge potential and is really liked in and around the club, but I don’t think we have seen the best of him this campaign and with some better advice he could have used this season to better effect.

“I feel sad that I haven’t seen the real Charlie Taylor that everyone talked about when I first arrived at the club, he will learn from the experience, but I am very disappointed with the advice he has taken.

Monk also gave an update about his own future, with lots of speculation over his position over the past few weeks.

“I had a brief chat with Andrea Radrizzani on Saturday, about how the season has gone, along with the current takeover situation and how it will work,” Monk stated.

“We are due to sit down in the coming weeks to go into more detail and discuss a variety of different matters.

“I’ve worked here now for a full season and I have a really good understanding of the club now and what it can be like.

“From the football side, having worked closely with this group every day, I have a clear understanding of what it needs to move forward and deliver a promotion winning campaign.

“In those discussions it is for me to see that the vision of the club and the owner is aligned with what I feel it needs.”
