WIGAN ATHLETIC: UNITED END SEASON WITH A DRAW

Wood penalty earns Leeds a point.

EFL Sky Bet Championship

Wigan Athletic 1 (Tunnicliffe 6) Leeds United 1 (Wood pen 50)

Leeds United ended the Sky Bet Championship season with a 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

United made a good start, Kemar Roofe found space in the area, but he couldn’t direct his shot on target.

Eunan O’Kane then played Pablo Hernandez into the Wigan penalty area, but he could only fire wide.

Leeds were made to pay for the missed opportunities in the sixth minute, Michael Jacobs played Ryan Tunnicliffe through on goal and he rounded Rob Green before finding the back of the net.

The Whites had a penalty appeal 12 minutes later, Hernandez floated a ball into the area and Chris Wood went down under Jacobs’ challenge, but no penalty was given.

Green was then called into action when Omar Bogle looked to go though on goal, but the Leeds stopper made a dangerous low diving save to prevent the Wigan forward.

The Leeds stopper was then called into action to prevent Tunicliffe from scoring his second of the match, again with a low diving save as the Wigan man looked to go through on goal.

Gaetano Berardi had an effort in first half stoppage time from the edge of the box, but the full-back couldn’t find the target with his effort.

Half Time: Wigan Athletic 1-0 Leeds United

After the break Leeds won a penalty when O’Kane was felled in the penalty area.  Wood stepped up to take it and slotted it home, netting his 30th goal of the season and the 100th in his career to level the scores.

Leeds then went so close to going in front, Roofe fired a half volley from 25 yards, which was denied by the crossbar.

Bogle then had a great opportunity to put Wigan back in front, he pounced on a short back pass from Ronaldo Vieira, Green saved the initial effort and Kyle Bartley did enough to prevent the Latics forward from scoring.

At the other end Roofe had the chance to put Leeds ahead, he had a free header inside the box, but he couldn’t get the better of Matt Gilks.

Stuart Dallas then fired an effort at goal from 25 yards, but Gilks made another good stop to deny the Northern Irish winger.

Wood had the opportunity for his second of the match when he got on the end of Alfonso Pedraza’s corner, but he couldn’t find the target.

The home side had a chance to win it late on, when the ball fell to Max Power on the edge of the box, but he could only fire over as both sides had to settle for a final day point.
