EFL Sky Bet Championship

Burton Albion 2 (Sordell 75, Kightly 78) Leeds United 1 (Bartley 80)

Two quick-fire goals from Burton Albion in the second half gave the Brewers a 2-1 victory over Leeds United at the Pirelli Stadium.

Leeds made a good start to the match, Pablo Hernandez went close inside four minutes striking just over the crossbar from the edge of the box.

The Whites continued to pressure winning back to back corners and had the ball in the back of the net, Pontus Jansson saw his header at goal blocked and Kyle Bartley’s looping header was finished by Chris Wood, but the goal was disallowed for a foul.

Burton then got on top and pinned the Whites in their own half, winning a number of corners, but failed to create a clear cut opportunity.

Leeds looked threatening at set-pieces and from another corner, Bartley saw his effort blocked.  From the next resulting corner Luke Ayling went close, but he couldn’t find the back of the net, following Bartley’s header across goal.

Pablo Hernandez picked up the ball following a decent pass from Ronaldo Vieira and tried to play the ball across the face of goal, but it was intercepted by Kyle McFadzean.

Kalvin Phillps had a good chance on the stroke of half time, a corner fell out to him on the edge of the box, but he could only fire over the crossbar on the half volley.

Half Time: Burton Albion 0-0 Leeds United

After the break Charlie Taylor put a cross into the box and Hernandez got his head to it, but he could only glance it wide.

Substitute Hadi Sacko created a decent opportunity for Wood, following a ball into the box, but the Leeds striker was flagged offside, when he headed his effort on target.

Jansson had a fine chance to give Leeds the lead in the 74th minute, Hernandez whipped in a corner and the Swedish centre-half had a free header, but could only fire over.

A minute after Jansson’s chance Burton took the lead, he turned on the edge of the box, before firing into the bottom right corner, past Rob Green.

The Brewers then doubled their lead, less than two minutes later, Michael Kightly went through on goal and he got the better of Green, despite the United keeper’s best efforts.

Leeds pulled a goal back in the 80th minute, Wood’s goalward header was poked in by Kyle Bartley to give the Whites hope.

Kemar Roofe then had a chance to level the scores, four yards from goal, he had his effort cleared off the line as Burton cleared to safety.

Leeds pressed during the five minutes of extra time, but couldn’t find a leveler, as the Whites lost further ground on the Play-Offs.
