INTERNATIONAL: MARCH ROUND-UP PART 1

United stars feature on international stage.

A number of Leeds United players have been in action for their respective countries over the past seven days.

Winger Stuart Dallas helped Northern Ireland beat Norway in European Qualification Group C playing 88 minutes.  The Green and White Army defeated Norway 2-0 at Windsor Park on Sunday thanks to goals from Jamie Ward and Conor Washington.  Michael O’Neill’s side remain in second place, five points behind leaders Germany.

Pontus Jansson played 90 minutes as the centre-back helped Sweden keep a clean sheet, beating Belarus 4-0 in Solna Municipality on Saturday evening.  The result has seen Sweden leapfrog the Netherlands into second place and they reamin three points behind France who occupy top spot.  Jansson could again feature for Sweden in Tueday’s Friendly with Portugal on Tuesday (19:45*).

United’s top goal-scorer Chris Wood was on the score-sheet as New Zealand defeated Fiji 2-0 on Saturday.  Wood captained the side to victory in Lautoka, with Marco Rojas also netting for the All Whites.  They face Fiji in the return fixture in Wellington on Tuesday (07:35*).

Modou Barrow couldn’t prevent Gambia from losing in a friendly last Thursday.  They took on Morocco, but were defeated 2-1, with former Leeds midfielder Mustapha Carayol converting a penalty for Gambia.  Barrow could feature in Monday’s clash with the Central African Republic.

Eunan O’Kane didn’t make the matchday squad for the Republic of Ireland’s 0-0 draw with Wales in Dublin last Friday.  Martin O’Neill’s side have slipped to second in European Qualification Group D, with Serbia taking top spot on goal difference.  O’Kane could feature in Tuesday’s friendly with Iceland at the Aviva Staidum (19:45*).

Liam Cooper, called up by Scotland was an unused substitute in last Wednesday’s 1-1 friendly draw with Canada, but failed to make the matchday squad as Gordon Strachan’s side recorded a vital 1-0 victory over Slovenia on Sunday in European Qualification Group F, to keep their hopes of making the 2018 World Cup alive.
