U23 REPORT: LEEDS DENIED BY LATE LEVELLER

United play out draw with Huddersfield Town.

Professional Development League

Leeds United 1 (Stokes 29) Huddersfield Town 1 (Dyson 90)

Huddersfield Town substitute Oliver Dyson’s 90th minute strike denied Leeds United’s Under-23s victory at Thorp Arch in the Professional Development League.

Leeds made a bright start to the match and went close from a corner, Jack Vann was unable to get the desired contact on his header, meaning his effort was off target.

In the 12th minute Tom Pearce tried a curling effort after being teed up by Eoghan Stokes, but he could only curl his effort wide.

The visitors almost broke the deadlock soon after, when Frank Mulhern’s lobbed effort almost caught out Leeds goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, but the United goalkeeper’s blushes were spared thanks to the post.

Ryan Hill then went close for the Terriers, he struck on goal from the edge of the area, but he was denied by a good save from Peacock-Farrell.

Leeds took the lead in the 29th minute.  Peacock-Farrell collected a free-kick, before recycling the ball quickly to allow the Whites to counter attack.  Leeds took full advantage of the situation, with Stokes finding the top right corner with his long range strike, via a deflection.

Huddersfield looked to hit back through Lewis O’Brien, he struck at goal, forcing Peacock-Farrell to parry, before pouncing on the loose ball.

The Whites had another good opportunity on the stroke of half time, Pearce saw his effort parried, before Stokes saw a volley from the edge of the box go just wide.

Half Time: Leeds United 1-0 Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield had an early chance after the break when striker Jack Boyle found space in the Leeds area, he managed to get his shot away and was only denied by a fine Peacock-Farrell save.

At the other end, Jack Clarke did well to break down the left flank, before showing some neat skill to get his effort away, but he could only fire over.

Leeds then had a brilliant opportunity to double the lead, Stokes played through Pearce one-on-one, but he couldn’t get the better of Huddersfield stopper Ryan Schofield, who produced an excellent save.

From the resulting corner, the ball fell to Alex Purver on the edge of the box and he fired just inches over the bar.

The visitors almost pulled a goal back in the 70th minute from a corner.  Ryan Booty delivered and Danny Kane’s header was only denied by Peacock-Farrell.

Town continued to press for a leveller and Boyle again went close, striking on goal from the edge of the box, bringing out the best of the Leeds goalkeeper to deny him.

Leeds continued to rally though and Pearce again went close from distance, firing just wide of the Huddersfield goal, as the Whites looked to seal the win.

Billy Whitehouse then put a good cross in for Leeds substitute Sammy Amissah, he did well to turn and get his shot away, but he couldn’t beat Roberts in the Terriers goal.

In the 88th minute Huddersfield had a great chance to level, but Mulhern could only head over the crossbar from six yards out.

However the visitors were not to be denied, when late on Dyson bundled in a Huddersfield free-kick at the back post, to prevent Leeds from taking all three points.
