GARRY MONK: A DISAPPOINTING DEFEAT

Head coach on Brighton loss.

“Disappointing” was how Leeds United  head coach Garry Monk described Friday’s 2-0 loss at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Championhsip.

Two penalties in either half from Glenn Murray and Tomer Hemed sent Brighton to the top of the division, as Kalvin Phillips saw red.

The United head coach felt Leeds could have offered a lot more on the field as the Seagulls extended the gap between the two sides with the win.

“It’s a disappointing defeat, we never allowed ourselves to show our best and true capabilities,” said Monk.

“A lot of it was from our own downfall and our own mistakes, you can’t afford to do that in any game, especially at a place like Brighton against a good team.

“We knew the first 20 minutes would be hard and you have to come though them, they had a few set pieces which we came through, but we were never really able to recover from the red card and the first goal.

“Credit to the players for the way they adjusted, our plan was to stay in the game and try and create one situation and take it, but ultimately we are disappointed.

"I felt the second penalty was 50/50, sometimes they go for you, sometimes they go against you and unfortunately it went against us.

“To come away from a team fighting to be at the top of the league, knowing it was your own downfall and not the play from them is disappointing, I'm frustrated we didn't do ourselves justice for our travelling fans.

“We have a quick turnaround, we have to take the feeling from the loss and use it as motivation.

“We need to dust ourselves down, we have to understand what we need to do better and re-focus very quickly for an important game against Reading on Tuesday at Elland Road.”
