FA YOUTH CUP: MARK JACKSON ON EXIT

U18s head coach on third round defeat.

Leeds United Under-18s head coach Mark Jackson was disappointed to see his side crash out of the FA Youth Cup.

His young side were beating Hull City 2-0 at Grange Lane Stadium, before two goals in the final minutes sent the game to extra time, with United eventually going down 3-2.

Jackson admitted it was a tough defeat for his side to take.

“It was a hell of a game and cup tie, but for us it was very cruel,” said Jackson.

“In the first half we really dominated, we created chances and played the type of football we know we can play.

“I thought their goalkeeper was exceptional and the defenders in their team got some crucial blocks in to prevent us being further ahead.

“We always felt the key goal would be the third one, we couldn’t get it and they really got their tails up.

“The players are very down, we were in control of the game until the 87th minute when we conceded the first goal.

“We knew Hull would have a spell and that was in the second half, but we weathered it and stood up to it.

“It was a clumsy challenge for us to give away a penalty so late on and it gave Hull the impetus in the final few minutes and they then managed to get the equaliser.

“It was always going to be difficult going into extra time with the injuries, cramp and tiredness we were carrying, so it was cruel to take.

“We are proud of the players, we were carrying players at the end, they put their bodies on the line and we stayed in the game until the last kick of the game.

“It was a world class save by their goalkeeper with the last kick of the game to deny us going to penalties.”
