GARRY MONK: THE PLAYERS CAN BE PROUD

Head coach on Livepool defeat.

Leeds United head coach Garry Monk felt his side were hard done by in suffering defeat against Liverpool at Anfield in the quarter-final of the EFL Cup.

Second half strikes from Divock Origi and Ben Woodburn sent the Reds into the semi-final at the expense of United.

Leeds however had some great opportunities in the match, Kemar Roofe came closest hitting the post with a spectacular strike and Monk felt the defeat wasn’t a fair reflection on the match.

“We had a game plan, I thought we followed it magnificently and we had some really good chances,” said Monk.

“I feel gutted for my players, they gave everything, they were brilliant and deserved more than what they got and I think everyone can see that.

“If we continue in this way and the team keeps showing the same spirit, passion and good quality then we can be successful.

“Anfield is a very difficult place to play, but we looked very dangerous and we had clear cut chances, with a little bit more composure we would have had two or three goals.

“We have a young group with limited experience, but they dealt with the atmosphere superbly.

“Our fans were incredible again, they could see the players were giving everything and the only thing missing was a couple of goals, on a different night we could have come away with the result.

“We all thought Kemar Roofe’s strike was in, including the stand behind me, that was just the unluckiness we had.

“We deserved the first goal, but unfortunately their quality came through and they scored with the couple of chances they had.

To come to Anfield and limit Liverpool to almost nothing was a really pleasing aspect, it is a big experience for a lot of our young players which will stand them in good stead going forward.

“The ambition now is to have these types of games week in, week out, if we continue in this way, then hopefully in the near future we can have more nights like this.

“The players can be proud of what we did, even if we didn’t get the result we deserved.”
