GARRY MONK: WE LOST TOTAL FOCUS

GARRY MONK: WE LOST TOTAL FOCUS

Head coach on Rotherham win.

Leeds United head coach Garry Monk was far from satisfied with his side’s victory over South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United.

Goals from Chris Wood and Souleymane Doukara had given Leeds a 2-0 lead at half time against the Millers who had been reduced to ten men, but a Richard Wood goal four minutes from time gave Rotherham hope, leaving Leeds hanging on to secure the win.

The United head coach was frank in his assessment and critical of the second half performance.

"I'm happy with the three points and overall I thought we deserved them, but we made very hard work of it at the end,” said Monk.

"I spoke at half time about not getting complacent, staying focused and aggressive, but the second half wasn't good enough.

“The last ten minutes was needless, we brought it on ourselves, if you give a team a sniff or chance in this league they will take it and we only had ourselves to blame.

“We got two goals up, they were down to ten men, psychologically that is when concentration needs to be at its highest and we lost total focus on what we should have been doing, which is unacceptable.

“As the second half went on I wasn’t happy, there were too many players doing the wrong thing and too many players giving the ball away and you can’t have that against anyone, because any team can hurt you if you are doing that.

“I was very pleased with the first period, the positive of the game was the first 20-25 minutes, there was some excellent football and we were really aggressive.

“We took our foot off the gas though, we got punished and the consequences could have been heavier, it is a lesson that needs to be learned from quickly.”
