GARRY MONK: I AM SO PROUD

Monk praises character of his side.

Head coach Garry Monk was thrilled with his penalty shootout victory over Norwich City.

United progressed to the quarter finals of the EFL Cup after twice fighting back from behind at Elland Road.

Goalkeeper Marco Silvestri made three penalty saves and Ronaldo Vieira scored the winning spot kick, despite United having to play the whole of extra time with just ten men due to an injury sustained by Lewie Coyle.

"I'm delighted and very proud of my team tonight and everyone involved,” said the Leeds head coach.

“From the second half onwards I thought we played unbelievable, I thought we were excellent and we had the chances to win the game in that period.

“We had to deal with adversity, we lost Coyle which turned the tie, but that character and determination shone through, we showed everything.

"It was an unbelievable atmosphere, the place was rocking and that is what football and cup ties are all about"

“We gave everything, that mentality is what you want in the team and if you do that, no matter the result you can be proud.”

Monk also praised the two shootout hero’s, along with the Elland Road crowd.

“Marco is an amazing shot stopper, he is so quick across his goal and he deserved that.

“Ronaldo is very young, but he stepped up and had the chance to be a hero and he was.

“The crowd played their part, everyone deserves massive credit.  I am so proud of everyone connected with the club."
