SHAMROCK ROVERS: GARRY MONK\'S VERDICT

The head coach reacts to Saturday's 3-0 victory at Tallaght Stadium...

United boss Garry Monk says he saw clear signs of improvement in Saturday afternoon's 3-0 pre-season friendly victory over Shamrock Rovers.

A brace from Marcus Antonsson and a Chris Wood penalty ensured Monk’s side ended their tour of Ireland with two wins from two, having seen off Shelbourne at Tolka Park three days earlier.

“It was definitely an improvement on Wednesday,” said Monk, reflecting on the convincing win at Tallaght Stadium.

“I had a good meeting with the players after Wednesday’s game and there were a lot of things that we needed to work on, but I saw a definite improvement today and that’s always good.

“Again, there are still things that we need to improve on, but that’s quite natural and it was good to end two really good weeks away with two wins.

“Even though I’m not so focused on the results, wins give confidence to the players and it was important they saw improvement from Wednesday.

“There was more team ethic out there than I saw on Wednesday – it was a little bit more cohesive.

“I’m learning about the group all the time and finding out more about the players, but this trip has given me the chance to see their characters. They’ve been excellent in terms of their attitude and application towards what we’re trying to do.”
