WIGAN: STAT PACK

Andrew Dalton provides the stats ahead of our Boxing Day clash...

It's back to Elland Road for a Boxing Day battle of the roses clash as 23rd-placed Wigan Athletic are the visitors.

Wigan have only ever visited Elland Road for three competitive games:

December 4th 2013 - Leeds United 2-0 Wigan Athletic, Championship

January 17th 2006 - Leeds United 3-3 Wigan Athletic (Wigan won 4-2 on pens), FA Cup Third Round replay

October 31st 2004 - Leeds United 0-2 Wigan Athletic, Championship

Five who played for both:

Michael Brown – The Hartlepool-born midfielder joined Wigan from Fulham in the summer of 2007 and made 64 appearances before joining Portsmouth two years later. From Pompey he joined Leeds in July 2011, appearing 78 times for the Whites and scoring three goals before being released last summer.

Salomon Olembe – Olembe joined Leeds on loan from French side Marseille in August 2003, making a total of 14 appearances. The versatile Cameroon international left Marseille in 2007 and went on trial at Derby County before being eventually snapped up by Wigan in September 2007, making a total of nine appearances for the Latics.

Kevin Sharp – Sharp joined Leeds from Auxerre in October 1992, making his debut in April 1993. He went on to make 18 appearances for the Whites before joining Wigan in November 1995. He would stay at the Latics for just under six years, appearing 221 times and scoring 12 goals.

Marlon King – King joined Leeds on loan from Nottingham Forest in March 2005, making nine appearances in the Championship. Following a spell at Watford, first on loan and then permanently, he joined Wigan in January 2008. He spent 22 months as a Wigan player, making 19 appearances and scoring just once.

Steven Caldwell – The Stirling-born player was another loan signing for Leeds in season 2003/04, this time from Newcastle in February 2004. He made 13 starts for the Whites, scoring once away at Blackburn Rovers. Following moves to both Sunderland and Burnley, he joined Wigan in August 2010, making 15 appearances for them.

Five stats:

Wigan’s last visit to Elland Road in December last year saw the Whites record their first ever victory over the side from the DW stadium thanks to a brace from Ross McCormack.

Wigan’s previous competitive visit to LS11 was an enthralling FA Cup Third Round replay in January 2006. Following a 1-1 draw at the JJB, it was back to Elland Road for a game that went all the way to a penalty shoot out following a 3-3 draw, which will be remembered for Gary Kelly’s strike. Wigan went through 4-2 on penalties

Wigan’s first ever visit to Elland Road came on Halloween 2004. It saw the debut of striker David Healy following his switch from Preston North End, however he was unable help his side to victory as goals from Alan Mahon and Jimmy Bullard won it for the visitors.

Wigan were the opponents for United's last friendly before embarking on their League One tour in August 2007. Leeds lost the game 2-1 with Jermaine Beckford scoring the goal.

Since 2000, Leeds United have had a mixed record on Boxing Day having played 13, won four, drawn five and lost four, with the last victory coming against Hartlepool United in 2009.
