COOK CLAIMS APPRENTICE AWARD

Midfielder recognised at Football League Awards...

Lewis Cook has been crowned as the Sky Bet Championship’s LFE Apprentice of the Year 2014/15.

The 18-year-old beat off competition from fellow nominees Joe Gomez of Charlton and Millwall’s Fred Onyedinma to claim the award at Sunday evening’s annual Football League Awards ceremony.

Lewis has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season at Elland Road, featuring 38 times in all competitions after quickly establishing himself as a key part of the side.

The Academy graduate is also up for United’s Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards at the forthcoming End of Season Awards Night.

After collecting his Apprentice of the Year award, Lewis said: "I didn’t expect this season to be as good as it has been. I’ve really enjoyed it.

"I’d like to thank the club for what they’ve done for me and my family for the support.

"I’ve just been trying to balance everything – schoolwork and playing games – it’s been hard.

"Neil Redfearn has believed in me, he gave me my chance.

"Redders has helped me. He’s been with me since I was younger and brought me through. I’m really grateful for what he’s done.

"There’s a lot of good talent coming through and it’s really good to play in that environment."

Players registered as a first or second-year scholar, or as a first-year professional, are eligible for the LFE Apprentice of the Year award, with one winner chosen from each of The Football League's three divisions.

Judges take into account the record of the player in all competitions since he became an apprentice as well as his educational attainment, disciplinary record and any other outstanding achievements.
