New signing Ross Turnbull says he plans to "challenge but also support" Marco Silvestri as United’s number one goalkeeper.

Turnbull, 30, became the club’s sixth new arrival of the summer on Wednesday afternoon, joining from local rivals Barnsley on a two-year deal following a successful trial at Thorp Arch.

The former Middlesbrough and Chelsea man was thrust straight into action and started the 1-1 friendly draw at York City, just hours after completing the switch which he says he was “desperate” to make happen.

Asked about how the move came about, Turnbull said: "It was just a phone call, really. Once I knew of the interest, I was desperate to come here.

"I’m just glad it’s all sorted and it’s now down to the hard work.

"I’ve come here to challenge Marco. He’s a top keeper so I’ve got to challenge him and support him.

"I’ve got to push him. If he’s playing well, that’s good for the team and that’s massively important.

"It’s my job to challenge him but also support.

"When I spoke to the manager and Richard (Hartis), they were keen for me to bring my experience on board, so it’s up to me to try and help the young boys and to set an example.

"It’s an absolutely massive club and we’ve got a lot of good, young players. You could tell by that last night and in training.

"We’ve just got to work hard and hopefully start the season well – we’ll see where that takes us."

On his first appearance in a Leeds shirt, Turnbull added: "I think there were a lot of positives to take out of it.

"The result was a little bit disappointing – we could have won the game with a few chances in the second half.

"It was disappointing to concede the goal just before I came off, but that’s football – they had one chance and they scored. We’ll move on the game in Austria.

"I enjoyed it, I loved every minute of it. It was good to get back out there playing.

"I thought I did well, I’ve just got to keep progressing and training hard. I’m looking forward to the start of the season."
