MURPHY RETURNS TO FIRST-TEAM TRAINING

Midfielder steps up his recovery from a pre-season knee injury...

Uwe Rosler has confirmed that Luke Murphy returned to first-team training at Thorp Arch earlier today after missing all five pre-season friendlies with a knee injury.

The midfielder sustained the problem during the early stages of United’s summer programme and underwent a minor operation after innocuously twisting his knee on the training pitch.

Rosler, assessing the fitness of his squad ahead of Saturday’s season opener against Burnley, said: "The good news is that Luke Murphy has trained again for the first time today with the first team.

"He has a little bit to go in terms of match practice but what a good day that is for us that he’s already back in training.

"He’s slightly ahead of schedule. The next step is that he needs conditioning and he needs match minutes.

"We will have to organise a friendly game for him and anyone who needs to get up to speed."

Fellow midfielder Tommaso Bianchi suffered a similar injury blow during the summer, picking up a cartilage issue during the friendly with Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Italian is now back on the way to recovery, though, after undergoing minor surgery last week.

“He had his operation and all went well," said Rosler. “He’s home and he starts his rehabilitation on Monday.”

Otherwise, Rosler says he has a fresh bill of health to choose from at Elland Road.

Asked if the rest of the squad would be fit for Saturday, the head coach said: "Yes, the team looks sharp, motivated, concentrated and prepared."
