Leeds United duo join festive dementia cafe session

Christmas Corner Flag Cafe session meets special guests.

The annual Leeds United Foundation Corner Flag Dementia Café Christmas party took place online recently with the support of two very special guests.

Leeds United duo Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas were both on hand at Thorp Arch to take part in the festive session that would usually take place at Elland Road, with members enjoying a game of bingo and taking part in a quiz all about the club throughout the hour.

The Scotland and Northern Ireland international took time out of the busy festive training schedule to meet and chat with the participants, who either suffer with early-onset dementia or are carers for those suffering with dementia. The members had prepared a number of burning questions for the double act, with the players taking it in turns to answer and spread some Christmas cheer.

Anthony Hall, Disability Officer for the Leeds United Foundation that delivers the Corner Flag Café initiative, said: “Our Christmas session has always been something our members and their carers look forward to most. They would usually be able to enjoy a lovely Christmas feast at Elland Road but this year we’ve all had to adapt to the situation and continue to make the best out of it.

“A massive thank you to Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas for joining the session and making it extra special in what has been a really difficult year and sometimes really isolating for our older generation, they’re a credit to the club and all of the members loved having them involved.”

Similar to the Corner Flag Dementia Café, the club’s official charity has recently launched a Sporting Memories programme that supports the mental health and wellbeing of our older generation of fans. These sessions take place virtually every week with a section for discussion and reminiscing and a physical activity element to ensure participants are looking after themselves whilst limited to what they can do and where they can go.
