Leeds United celebrate Organ Donation Week

Organ Donation Week takes place from 7th to 13th September 2020.

This week marks Organ Donation Week and Leeds United will be helping to raise awareness around the recent law change and the importance of discussing organ donation with loved ones.

Organ Donation Week, starting today, will run until Sunday 13th September and aims to celebrate those who are currently registered as organ donors whilst also encouraging those who are not, to do just that and potentially help save someone’s life.

Earlier this year, the law around organ donation in England changed to an ‘opt-out system’ which will allow more people to save lives. This means that those who do not register and specifically ‘opt-out’ or are in one of the excluded groups will automatically be considered to have agreed to be an organ and tissue donor when they die.

Adults covered by this recent change still have a choice whether  they want to be an organ donor and their families will still be involved before organ donation goes ahead but we encourage as many people as possible to discuss the topic with those closest to you and register your decision online at organdonation.nhs.uk.

It is important to share your decision with your family and loved ones to give them certainty to support your decision should they ever have to during what will be an incredibly difficult time.

Every day across the UK someone dies waiting for a transplant. At Leeds Hospitals alone there have been over 300 successful liver and kidney transplants between March 2019 and April 2020, with the number of people needing a transplant constantly increasing.
