NCS SUCCESS FOR SUMMER 2018

NCS SUCCESS FOR SUMMER 2018

Foundation have another successful summer with NCS programme.

Over 300 young people took part in another successful summer for the NCS programme delivered by the Leeds United Foundation.

The National Citizen Service (NCS) is an activity programme for young people aged between 15-17 years old. The programme focuses on developing various skills including teamwork, leadership and communication. The four-week programme ran from July through to August earlier this year.

During the first week, participants travelled to Scotland or Shropshire and they were tasked with participating in outdoor adventure activities such as abseiling, raft building and zip lining.

The following week was spent at Leeds Beckett University where participants had to live independently in the halls of residence on site, this involved taking part in various workshops such as first aid, ‘The Apprentice’ and public speaking to develop their confidence and life skills. Participants also had to cook for themselves and they took part in their own ‘Come Dine With Me’ challenge.

Throughout the final two weeks the young people were asked to plan and deliver social-action projects to raise awareness and money for organisations in the local community – together they raised the huge amount of £6,931 for seven different charities.

The summer programme finished with a large graduation ceremony at the Village Hotel in Morley - an event to celebrate the hard work and the achievements of all the participants.

16-year-old Megan who was one of the NCS participants described her experience, saying: “NCS not only brought me out of my comfort zone but also made me realise I need to think positively about the challenges ahead, as you can succeed in anything if you really put your mind to it!"

The NCS team at the club's official charity would like to thank the social-action partners for their support throughout the summer including; The Howarth Foundation, The Whole Austism Family, The Howland Centre, The Batley Homeless Project, Northorpe Hall Child & Family Trust, Guide Dogs & Alopecia UK.
