WARM WELCOME TO ADVERSITY UNITED

Local football team for disabled children enjoy day out at Elland Road.

Leeds United Football Club welcomed Adversity United to Elland Road recently to enjoy a special matchday experience together.

Adversity United is a local football team based near Harrogate, launched by 17-year-old Cameron Osburn, who wanted to create a team that would help disabled boys and girls play the sport they love and develop their skills.

The club is aimed at children under the age of 12 and the main goal is to help change the lives of these young people by encouraging them to engage more in sport and exercise and build their confidence before making the step up to secondary school.

Cameron runs weekly training sessions with a number of other coaches and during the launch of the project last year he said: “Living with cerebral palsy, I know first-hand that having a disability doesn’t have to impact the passion you have for sport; you just need to find a way to play it.

“Adversity United is about bringing boys and girls together who love football but can’t access it through the conventional clubs. Whether you’re physically disabled, have learning difficulties or are on the autistic spectrum this is a club for everyone.”

Leigh Woolard, who helps to look after the children that are a part of Adversity United, sent some feedback from their visit to Elland Road, he said: “From the kids, parents and coaches of Adversity United we would like to express our thanks for having us as guests to Leeds United at Saturday’s game – the experience was amazing. For some of the kids it was their first match and they really got into it.

“We really appreciate your efforts to organise and make us feel welcome. Wishing you success for the season ahead and I hope we will be able to see you again.”
