WHITES FOUNDATION HOLD EFL KIDS CUP

Leeds schools hope to make EFL cup final..

The Leeds United Foundation is holding the biggest grassroots tournament in the city that will work towards one Leeds school playing to gain a place to play at Wembley Stadium.

The EFL Kids Cup Road to Wembley Championship will see more than 50 schools take part across the whole city in a bid for a Leeds school to get a chance to play on the same day as the Championship Play-Off final in May.

The tournament has already kicked off with the North West local qualifying round which has seen students from Tranmere Park Primary School become overall winners and St Mary’s Horsforth progress to the training camp and city finals.

Each local area qualifying round will see two teams progress, who will then be invited to a training camp at Leeds United training ground Thorp Arch. This will be followed by the city finals a week later where the winning school will represent Leeds United at the north regional finals.

The winning school will then complete in a 12 team tournament from other Northern Championship clubs for a place at the final, held at Wembley on the same day as the Championship Play Off final - promising to be a day not to forget.

Back in 2011, pupils from Harrogate school Willow Tree Primary were crowned EFL Kids Cup champions after beating Welsh school Pontybrenin 1-0 in the final at Wembley – an achievement the Foundation hope to be able to re create again!

Michael Kinsey, Premier League Programme Manager at the Foundation, said: “This is a fantastic tournament with more than 50 schools involved. With hundreds of children competing for the top spot there is a lot of competition but it is a great experience for the school teams to be involved in.

“We can’t wait to see the tournament progress and hopefully we can make the final in May at Wembley.”
