Howard Wilkinson and Mel Sterland share experience with military veterans..
In conjunction with military veteran charity Sporting Force, the Leeds United Foundation, held a special event at Elland Road which saw Leeds United legends Howard Wilkinson and Mel Sterland share their experiences and advice to military veterans getting back into work.
Sporting Force have worked with the club’s Foundation for around three years and have worked together to get war veterans back into work after serving in the military. The organisations have worked to get people back into normal working life and support them during the transitional recruitment process.
The Royal British Legion was in attendance and showed their support to the work the Foundation and Sporting Force are doing for veterans in Leeds and surrounding areas.
Steve Gaughan, Case Officer at the Royal British Legion, said: “The partnership between the two organisations is fantastic and it is a great initiative for war veterans to be involved in.
“The power of sport is important and it is evident through the fantastic support of club’s like Leeds United what can be achieved for people and we are proud to be a part of that and be at the event to show our support to the veterans.”
Tommy Lowther, founder of Sporting Force, said: “As the founder of the charity I can’t say thank you enough to the Foundation for their ongoing support in helping our ex-military members get back into work.
“We are so pleased that Howard and Mel have been on hand to talk to our military veterans and share their expertise and experience. If every club supported like Leeds United, we would have a lot more veterans employed.”
