Young people have enjoyed taking part in a unique programme that engages with the local community, develops communication skills and runs activity filled residential trips.

The National Citizen Service, a national programme delivered by the Leeds United Foundation, works with young people aged 15-17 to develop communication, organisation and team building skills, along with working to benefit the local community.

As part of the programme, NCS participants have taken part in a residential week in the Scottish Borders and Northamptonshire, which sees them involved in activities including raft building, rock climbing and mountain biking.

As well as looking great on a CV, NCS is a chance to develop new skills that help participants to get ahead in life. The programme encourages growth in confidence and develops teamwork and leadership skills.  NCS is also recognised by UCAS so it’s a great addition to use in University applications.

Amal, aged 16, said: “I’ve found NCS and working with the Leeds United Foundation really thrilling and I’m always excited for the next activity.

“Everyone's so supportive, I don't feel embarrassed and it’s nice to see and help people overcome their fears without realising.

“Personally, I have learned to contribute more in activities and understood the importance of team work and communication skills. I feel like I’m being listened to when contributing and I don't feel scared to have an opinion.”

Liaba, aged 17, said: “NCS and working with the Leeds United Foundation has been great. I have really enjoyed jumping in the water; that was really fun. Everyone doing activities together and not individually has been great.

“I’ve really enjoyed the times where you have to work as a team and the raft building has been fantastic!”
