Memory Match: AFC Bournemouth 1-3 Leeds United

Memory Match: AFC Bournemouth 1-3 Leeds United

A look back at a past clash.

Leeds United face AFC Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon, in the Premier League. Looking back over previous years, Ben Scott takes us back in time to look at a memorable encounter on the South Coast.

Leeds United picked up a pair of draws at Dean Court, in March 1989 (the club’s first ever game at Bournemouth) and September of the same year, both in Division Two.

The only clash before this saw Leeds win an FA Cup tie in round three at Elland Road, in the January of 1939. Jackie Hargreaves, Tom Cochrane and Eric Stephenson enjoyed a goal each. At that time, the visitors played as Bournemouth & Boscombe!

The next two visits down on the south coast would be much more memorable and fruitful, as Leeds won both. A day after Bonfire Night of 2007, Leeds United visited Dorset and made the long journey home with three points, courtesy of a 3-1 win. Tresor Kandol bagged two goals - one with four minutes played, the other with four left to go, alongside a Seb Carole goal on 54 minutes.

Leeds had last visited for the promotion-sealing win in the May of 1990, when Lee Chapman headed home off a Chris Kamara cross, sending Leeds back into the top-flight and the Cherries to the third tier. It would be in that division that this featured clash took place.

Before the match could start, referee Steve Bennett delayed kick-off by 15 minutes to allow the stadium to fill up for what was then a new record attendance of 9,632.

The hosts took an early lead, through a sixth-minute goal from Andrew Surman. But Leeds showed clinical finishing, with a trio of goals with 23 minutes left to seal the outcome.

The equalising goal was from Souleymane Doukara. He lost the attention of the hosts’ defenders as he veered his run slightly right of centre and from around 10-yards hit a first time shot across goalkeeper Lee Camp, low into the opposite corner.

With eight minutes to go, defender Giuseppe Bellusci fired a rocket of a free-kick from well outside the home penalty area, the shot curling high into the goal.

After getting the first goal, Doukara got an assist. Leeds broke clear on the counter-attack and he sent through a ball that was deadly accurate for the forward Mirco Antenucci. He kept racing forward through the centre and after the first few touches had taken him onto the edge of the box, he was confronted by Camp – but remained super calm and coolly drilled a sweet shot over and beyond him.

This current season of 2022/23 saw them compete together for the first time in the top-flight, and Leeds enjoyed the bragging rights in a 4-3 victory in an explosive game on 5 November. Leeds raced into a three-minute lead, with Rodrigo smashing in a penalty. The visitors then surged in to a 3-1 lead before Sam Greenwood curled a great shot home from distance on the left as he attacked. That was with 60 minutes played. On 68, he assisted as his corner on the right was headed home by skipper Liam Cooper.

Just 14 minutes later, Crysencio Summerville got the winner when he chipped the ball over Mark Travers in goal. Summerville’s finish matched the assist quality of Wilfried Gnonto, who had raced forward from well in his own half.
