Hosts of legends to feature at Elland Road on Saturday 28th March
Leeds United are delighted to welcome the FC Bayern Munich Legends team to Elland Road to take part in this charity fundraising match against a Leeds United Select XI, in support of the great work carried out by the Leeds United Foundation in the community.
The game will be played at Elland Road during the International break on Saturday 28th March and will kick off at 3pm. The last time these two sides met was of course that infamous night in Paris, the 1975 European Cup Final, which gave birth to the ‘We are the Champions, Champions of Europe’ chant still ringing round the terraces today.
For Leeds United, some of the most popular and high profile players from the Clubs recent history will be pulling on the famous white jersey once again, with several players from the Champions League era including Olivier Dacourt, Lee Bowyer, Eirik Bakke, Ian Harte, Gary Kelly and Danny Mills plus key players from our League One promotion winning campaign including Jermaine Beckford, Luciano Becchio, Andy Hughes and the gaffer Simon Grayson will also be taking part.
Other members of the Leeds United squad will include former England Internationals Steve Hodge and Rob Green, Scotland keeper Neil Sullivan and Premier League golden boot winner Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. David Weatherall, Noel Whelan, Michael Brown, Micky Gray, Bobby Davison and Richard Cresswell are also in the squad.
The Leeds United XI will be co-managed by two of the most successful managers in the club’s history, Howard Wilkinson and David O’Leary.
For Bayern Munich, Brazilian World Cup winner Lucio will be playing alongside the unmistakeable figure of Carsten Jancker. South American style and flair will also be on display with Martin Demichelis, Ze Roberto and Giovane Elber all bringing their samba skills to Elland Road.
The two teams will be lead out by players from the 1975 European Cup Final team, including Peter Lorimer and Norman Hunter.
“I’m really looking forward to what will be a really special day at Elland Road,” said David O’Leary. “The Centenary Events that have been organised by the Club have been first class and it will be great to catch up with some familiar faces and a fantastic opportunity for the fans to come out and to raise money to support the great work the Leeds United Foundation does in the local community.”
“The 1975 European Cup final was a momentous game for both clubs, but for different reasons,” said Giovane Elber, Ambassador of FC Bayern Munich Legends “I am delighted that our Legends team will play Leeds United again. Not only will it be a fantastic way to honour the Leeds United centenary, but 2020 also marks our 120th year anniversary too.”
