Leeds United Under-21s kept up their excellent winning streak by beating Newcastle United Under-21s at Thorp Arch, to extend their lead at the top of the table.

In a tough encounter against the Magpies, Max Dean scored an impressive hat-trick - all coming in the second half - after Kris Moore’s first minute opener was cancelled out, sending the teams in level at the break.

Following the win, the Whites are six points clear of second placed Southampton after nine games of the campaign, and they will now go into the international break sitting firmly on top in Premier League 2 Division 2.

When the match got underway at Thorp Arch, Leeds were on the front foot instantly took the lead. Charlie Allen whipped in a pinpoint ball to the back post, where Moore leapt highest to head home.

However, the away side hit back quickly. Breaking free down the right and running into the box, Josh Scott kept composed to finish well and draw Newcastle level - with just seven minutes on the clock.

The remainder of the half saw plenty of shots on goal, but none of which would change the scoreline. Joe Snowdon had a couple of efforts well blocked, along with teammate Allen who saw a goal bound effort turned behind.

A free-kick opportunity presented a chance for Leeds to retake the lead, but Morten Spencer’s powerful strike was tipped around the post by Jude Smith in the visiting net.

That would be that before the interval and the teams went in level, in what had been a closely-fought first half display from each side.

HALF TIME: Leeds United 1-1 Newcastle United

Challenging his side to go out and win the game in the second half, Michael Skubala made small tactical changes which would see his side impose themselves on the game with two quick fire goals.

Cody Drameh found space to get down the right wing and he clipped a ball in behind the Newcastle defence, perfectly for Dean, who controlled well before then slotting low underneath the ‘keeper and putting his side back ahead.

Just two minutes later, the striker was at it again, and got his second of the game along with United’s third. This time it was Snowdon who made the chance, pressing the backline and winning the ball before squaring it to Dean to slot home, via the post.

It was now all Leeds and Skubala’s side were in full control. It could have been four when captain for the match, Alfie McCalmont went on a quick run forward, but his shot curled narrowly wide of the top corner.

With just under 30 minutes to play, the away side got back into the match and looked to mount a comeback. It came from Harry Barclay, who struck the ball low and hard into the net from the edge of the area.

However, the hope the Magpies had was quickly gone, when Dean scored his third of the game and a fourth for the Whites. Snowdon was the provider once more, slipping the striker in behind the defence again, and he took the chance brilliantly to net his hat-trick.

After getting a solid lead in the match, the team then saw the game out well in the closing stages and claimed another excellent three points in doing so.
